Detective chic

6th Feb 2016

So my wacom driver wasn't functioning properly. I decided to use this to my advantage and came up with this cut out lookin style. Tried to use a different pallet than my usual too! If any of u graphic designers/illustrators have a good tutorial on colour usage please send!

Just realized how bad by anatomy and proportion has gotten without practice! Although I was just messing around :P

Just experimenting with a new style. Really gone out of practice with the colour palette! Hope I get better with more such experiments.

Shiftin' Shade Cover art!

15th April 2014

So this is a project I took up for a friend who is an awesome musician. He has recently started Electro-Jazz. His name is Darren Pareira, a.k.a Shiftin' Shade. You can follow him and his upbeat fresh music HERE. I made a cover art for him which may/may not appear on his first Vinyl Album. Here is the entire process with the final results. ;) Enjoy.
Initial explorations that I showed Darren

The final painted artwork. I just went blank when it came to the background, but then I thought I'd leave it that way.

Tried out some filters. I actually liked the last one a lot, Darren even tried an ACID filter which I've tried really hard to find but failed.

Hilltop

21st March 2014

So this was done sometime near 27th Feb. Went on a trek with a friend, and it was so refreshing to see something other than the city. We climbled a small mountain and the weather was gloomy, and it rained, and the view was amazing. I guess once in a while it's something we really need from our lives - distance. It just puts a lot of things into perspective.

Cheers, and enjoy. :)

Birthday Rock n' Roll Darren!

27th Dec 2013

Finally I can upload this coz I just gifted it to my friend Darren for his birthday! Hope he liked it! It was so much fun painting this one. I took reference from his profile pictures like a creepy stalker for his character and his epiphone guitar. Everything else comes from knowing him! XD Done in 5 wee hours of the morning!

Day 33 - Fashion Illustration #01

23rd Dec 2013

So yeah one of the things most people don't know about me is that I love fashion, and I love people who can really drape themselves up. I decided to do this for fun, took bout 3-4 hours. Wish I had a better sense of color. I tried exploring with some forms and colors and textures, but the textures didn't go as much. Cheers!

Painttool SAI, Sherlock and Shagun!

17th Dec 2013

Well after SOOO long I made some 'artwork' and not practice unfinished drawings. One of my favorite deviantartists named Barukuri said she uses painttool SAI to paint her artworks, so I decided to download the trial and mess around with it. This is an absolutely GREAT software for painting. There are only a few presets and brushes and textures, but they're absolutely wonderful!! And it's got the same shortcuts as photoshop, but things are def. a little different. The colors and the brushes just look amazing! I didn't spend too much time on it, but I came up with this..

The resolution isn't great because I hadn't planned an artwork when I started. I just wanted to paint something fresh and it turned out to be this! It's actually inspired from the BBC Sherlock. I can't wait for Season 3! I'm so glad I did something for myself, and I started a new beautiful software today! XD XD

On the sidelines, I noticed I just got 111 followers! In India that's a lucky number, it's called 'Shagun', which means giving more than a hundered (more happiness than desired); generally a sum of 111 is given as a gift during weddings and other celebrations. It's hard to translate it. So thanks guys!

Drowning

23rd May 2013

Made this gesture of a guy drowning a long time back. I composed the gesture into a background and left it unfinished (like so many other concepts). I was backing up some data today and found the unfinished work and decided to finish it because I was feeling all creative and emotional! ;) Of course I wish I had drawn a better pose or done something better with his arms. >_< Enjoy and critiques are encouraged.

Daenerys Targaryen - The mother of dragons

16th May 2013

This was long overdue. I was dying to make some fanart of Dany (a.k.a: Daenerys Targaryen/The mother of dragons/Khaleesi). And my awesome friend Sid had asked me to do a kickass drawing of a female lead. After learning he's a GoT fan too, I didn't need another reason. This one's for Sid and the years of delay I caused to gift him this!

I absolutely LOVE this character from Game of Thrones and I love the HBO version as well! Hope you guys liked it. Need to learn better anatomy and foreshortening! Explored some brushes as well with this one.

PS CS5
Time taken: 5 hours

Additionally: I gave the piece to Sid, framed. He did expect something, his VALKYRIE. I was hoping he wouldn't be disappointed with Dany, and luckily, he wasn't!! The dude hung it on his wall straight away! And I was worried I'd chosen the wrong colored mount but it looked kinda awesome on his chocolate wall. This is the first artwork of mine that I've framed! ^__^

Mumma's birthday card

30th March 2013

I don't generally do cards anymore. I wish I did though. So I decided it's hightime for a birthday card. Here's my Mom's card that I made in literally 5 minutes.

Quick and rough emergency concept done before 12am for Mum's birthday card.

The final birthday card! I'm pretty happy with it.

Headphone girl

3rd Dec 2012

What a drab Sunday. We were struggling to work on our films after such a long hiatus. Here's the sketch I did today. Forced myself to color it. Also, sorry for the boring title! I couldn't think of anything else. I always draw american girls, so I decided to draw a dark skinned asian with black hair today instead.

Here's something I learnt this week. Never compromise on your personal work. It's okay if you slack with your diploma project, or your internship a little bit, as long as you're giving it your best, but never stop working on your own projects, your own drawings. This is something that keeps us going, keeps are hands moving and motivates us to work on everything else because this is where and why we started in the first place. To express, and to allow people to see and feel things from our perspective.

I get through most of the week thanks to my best bud Alok NR. I hope everyone has someone they can pour out their insecurities in art to, and someone who can keep them motivated and going even at the worst and stressful times. (Check out his awesome blog)

Cheers and have a happy week!

Day 24 - Her eyes

6th August 2012

I'm getting a lot of visuals listening to some wonderful songs these days. Sometimes I get very emotional and I draw everything I feel, even though I don't fully understand it. I feel the way someone's eyes look tells you everything about them.

Day 23 - Chasing Cars

2nd August 2012

Just for fun. Thought of this scene while listening to Snow Patrol - Chasing Cars. Although it was much more beautiful in my head. Enjoy!

Colorscripts for 'The Mailbox'

The first few color scripts I tried - in order of the scenes. Learnt a lot about overthinking! Well as students we always want to make our first short film very fancy, with a really unique style. Now all this is great when 1) You're NOT a one woman job, 2) You're on a tight deadline and 3) You're not getting paid.

Leaving all of that aside, I took a lot of help from artists I admire who really know how to use color. Pascal Campion, Hans Bacher, Abhishek Singh's advice, and Ram, my friend who will be a graduate today! :) Also great films like Triplets of Belleville have had a huge influence on me, and I want someone that kind of look for my film. There are tons more who I have studied from over the years, but one thing' for sure, you really can't learn color unless you observe and imitate. After all that's said and done it comes down to the practice of color. It was really frustrating in the beginning. I wanted to concentrate on light, tones, mood, but we should always remember that we are trying to communicate something.

Day 11 - Title Image

25th Dec '11

Wooohoooo!!!! Finally I've drawn something for the title bar. I had earlier as well, but I never thought anything was good enough. So much for self-destruction! I'm almost happy with how it turned out! Hope you guys enjoy it.

Incase I change it later on, here's a snapshot.

And here's the initial sketch. :P!

And here's a Bonus: Did a quickie for my writing blog 'what are the odds'.

Chao! :)

Merry Christmas!!

25th Dec '11

Merry Christmas to all!!!

Here in India we don't celebrate much of Christmas - unless we're christian! Being Goan does has its advantages of being part of this festival. Goa is paradise in December. It's lit, people are jolly and exchanging cakes, Bebinka, Dodol and chocolates. You see Christmas trees and cribs around you and the churches have the traditional Konkani midnight mass. Although I didn't do much this Christmas, I think it may have just been the best 2 days of Christmas I've ever celebrated. My family got together and me and my cousins made it through an impromptu plan of Shaami(my elder cousin bro - Abhinav)'s reckless driving (he's gonna kill me if he reads this), a match of beach Frisbee, swimming at Shivani-Soham's place, Rummikub and Pictionary (with Dhanu's innovate drawing skills), ghost stories at the terrace, and more swimming and eating at my place. So much that my body's been ACHING! :'(

BUT here's the thing guys, this post was NOT about Christmas, although I have the gift for gab. This is about Inception - the best part of today!
I was waiting to get a copy of a Bluray print of Inception and had vowed not to watch for the second time until I did. Thanks to Alok and a wonderful Christmas vacation, I could fulfill my long awaited rewatch! :D

Day 9 - Panjim Church

17th Dec 2011

2 hours 15 mins - approximately the time I took to make this. I still dunno how to work well with dry pastels.. I mean, the thing smudges over more than I need it too..And its unclear how to get the light and the time of the day into the painting.. Anyway, hopefully it'll come with a little more reading and practice...

Finally something for PJH. It's really been a while and I'm so sorry I haven't done more artwork for a huge gap in between day 9 and today.

Christina Yang

She's one of my favourite characters from Grey's Anatomy. I love her, I love her confidence, her competitiveness, her stone-heartedness, her determination, she is just amazing. This is the first time I've attempted a digitally coloured portrait.. It's not exceptional, but I learned a lot, and I'm trying to use as much as I know so far. :) Pretty happy with the result. :)

The Greedy Pencil

This blog is a collection of (some of) my work, the art I do for fun, my inspirations and the sweat that goes into making animated films. Enjoy!
