Tooth - Rise of the Guardians

26th Dec 2012

Rise of the Guardians has finally come to India!! :D And besides a few story glitches here and there (and also, I was hoping for a better end for 'Pitch'), I absolutely LOVED it! I loved the fact that they brought a totally insignificant character (Jack Frost) into the limelight, and the acting of Jack and Pitch was absolutely brilliant. I loved all the characters and loved almost everything about it. :) So I had to do some fanart. So I drew a sketch of 'Tooth' (Tooth fairy) from Rise of the Guardians!

Most of my friends didn't like her character, and thought it was the weakest of all of them. But I think she was kind of a catalyst to get the story moving, just like 'North'. The drawing and the colors completely from memory - proving that it must've been a really great character design. (Now I gotta find his/her name). Hope you like it!

Kingfisher spotted

13 Dec 2012

I really wish I could board faster. I can't believe I spent approx. 5 hours on this. :| Boards should be quick! Anyway, I decided I had to do this and leave all other work aside. Lose inhibition and tell a story I want to tell!

My friend Krithika and I had just come back from watching Hotel Transylvania (I went with really low expectations) which was really good in terms of animation and the amazing visuals, compositions and editing! It had a good first half with the introduction of the major characters, but on the downside, it had a super flawed and unrealistic storyline (even for an animated movie)! Anyway, on the way back to the insti, we caught a glimpse of something turquoise!
So here goes.

It was pretty much the end, until

Sketchbook stuff

11th Dec 2012

Here're some old (November) sketchbook scans that I did for fun. Some while watching Xmen, Spiderman, myself in the mirror, Inception, some from memory and some from life (Miramar beach - where I grew up).

Wish I'd take the effort to turn the sketches into lineart and even color them traditionally! :( But I'm too lazy. Still trying!!

Oh yeah - this is Steve Hickner; did a wanna-be caricature of him while watching his talk on CTNx. (It was very inspirational! I'd say a must-see for everyone who wants to be in the animation industry)

Lissa Treiman's blog and Bill Pressing's painting process

6th Dec 2012

Whenever I find a story blog, I am always overexcited to see the artists work. So I was browsing cartoonbrew > saw the annie award nominations for story > found Lissa Treiman's uber cool blog!! She's a story artist at Disney.
I have spent the entire morning archiving her wonderful work. So funny and so simple! Drool. I wish I did so much work fr myself as she does, besides her boards for pixar/disney. I also don't get how she manages to maintain her own style while working in disney, where most people have a consistent way of drawing characters.

Anyway, do check out her blog. Besides her awesome work, >>

Here's Bill Pressing's painting process she mentioned and followed in one of her blog posts. So so helpful!
Hope you guys like it.

Headphone girl

3rd Dec 2012

What a drab Sunday. We were struggling to work on our films after such a long hiatus. Here's the sketch I did today. Forced myself to color it. Also, sorry for the boring title! I couldn't think of anything else. I always draw american girls, so I decided to draw a dark skinned asian with black hair today instead.

Here's something I learnt this week. Never compromise on your personal work. It's okay if you slack with your diploma project, or your internship a little bit, as long as you're giving it your best, but never stop working on your own projects, your own drawings. This is something that keeps us going, keeps are hands moving and motivates us to work on everything else because this is where and why we started in the first place. To express, and to allow people to see and feel things from our perspective.

I get through most of the week thanks to my best bud Alok NR. I hope everyone has someone they can pour out their insecurities in art to, and someone who can keep them motivated and going even at the worst and stressful times. (Check out his awesome blog)

Cheers and have a happy week!

One Direction character sketches

30th Nov 2012

I can't believe it's already the 30th. I haven't accomplished much since my desperate attempt to change my life on the 26th. I tried to make a timetable and I am struggling to stick to it. It's a daily one. Anyway, I was too tempted to draw my favs from One Direction. I have been stalking them and staring at their cute faces like a teenage girl. :| Although I don't feel dumb because they seem like genuine and humble boys. So happy for their success. :) Here's Harry Styles, Zayn Malik and Liam Payne. Tried to get as close as I could to their likeness. Partly done from memory (imagine the stalking I've wasted time on).

The Greedy Pencil

This blog is a collection of (some of) my work, the art I do for fun, my inspirations and the sweat that goes into making animated films. Enjoy!
