HiVE Aug-Sept Issue Cover

So HiVE is the M.I.T newsletter. I'm the founder and editor along with 4 other friends. This time was not easy, and it never is, but it's ready now, and this is the cover illustration.

So that's for the cover...Looks like this on HiVE:

And this is how the editorial page is looking.

She stood in the Doorway

This was my third entry for sketchoholic's 'sweet silhouttes'. The thumbnail looked better than this, and I was hoping I'd make a good job with the colour. Colour is still very difficult for me. Luckily in the silhoutte contest there was less to think about thanks to the majority of the space being dark.

Monster in the mountains

This was my second entry for sketchoholic's 'sweet silhouttes'. Again, I leanrt a lot of staging. I practiced more colour on this that the other two, but this one looks least appealing in terms of colour. The thumbnail looked way better.

Drenched alone

This was my first sketchoholic for the contest 'Sweet Silhouttes'. Luckily Tanu reminded me that the deadline was today and I managed to churn out 3 pretty decent illustrations in 7 hours! Well here they are. This is the first piece.

I learnt a lot about staging and color thanks to the amazing - Hans Bacher. He's my god. The god of visual development. I am stunned and motivated by his work in Dream Worlds, his book.

A friend of mine said this entry reminds him of Charlie Chaplin, the rain and all.. The hat, the umbrella. So I'll end this with his quote -
“I always like walking in the rain, so no one can see me crying.”

Display Icon

And finally, a hand drawn display icon for my profile! ;) Took 2 mins but I've been so lazy to do this.

Devi

Devi - A character design I made for the fun of it. An indian warrior princess. Didn't explore enough. And yeah I know the hand isn't foreshortened and wrong... I'll make a better pose the next time. :) Had done this exploration before the sketchoholic entry. Really helped! Picked the final pose outta one of these.

And then I tried my hand at a speed paint in wacom. I don't even know what that really is! But I think its doing a quick colouring, like this.

Gestures

Thursday Sept 15th

Some gestures sketched from pixelovely. They're pretty bad, because my hand has rusted, but hopefully I'll be back soon. :)

Badass Babe - Archeress

This is my entry for the latest sketchoholic contest: Badass Babes. Hope I get atleast a few votes. :-s
I took over 7 hours to do this over 3 days, hopefully I'll get fastr at it. I learnt a lot about digital painting, took a lot of reference. Here's some advice:

1.Always ink it to get a clearn picture of the sketch.
2.Put a tinted bg colour so that the paint can be seen well.
3.Always add tones to make sure the lighting is the way you visualized it.
4. Organize, rename and store your layers in folders to avoid confusion. Lock the ones you don't wanna paint over.

And then start painting!

Here's a really good tutorial for digital painting by Reiq.

3D Weightlift

Been working on my weightlift for over a week. I used the andy rig first, with its completely distored proportions. And now I'm using Norman, which clearly proved the be much better. Learnt a lot, but after I was done with the whole thing I learnt about making the character set. I wish I'd done that earlier. Alas. Anyway, here's the blocking I did till now. Will be starting fresh again soon.

Thumbnails of the weightlift.

The Greedy Pencil

This blog is a collection of (some of) my work, the art I do for fun, my inspirations and the sweat that goes into making animated films. Enjoy!
